Perennial ryegrass is found in many plant communities of North America west of the Mississippi River. It forms low loose clumps with blue-grey leaves. Plumes of flowers arch over the leaves in spring. It grows in many situations, tolerating soils from sand to clay, and is useful on banks, for naturalizing and in dry gardens.
