A beautiful South African perennial related to the kangaroo paws, this perennial grows from a profusely branched, tuberous rootstock, forming small thickets. The lower leaves are 2-3 foot long, relatively narrow, and deeply ribbed, resembling those of seedling palms. In summer, stout blooming stems rise to a height of 4-5 feet or so, carrying dense clusters of 3/4 inch yellow blossoms. Sun, reasonably well drained soil, constant moisture during growth and bloom. Hardy to 15 degrees F. or less.
